I recently started writing about introversion. But, in this short time, it has become clear to me that people don’t really understand what introversion is. Most people think introverts are shy, depressed, or have social phobia. Some people will even try to ‘save’ you.
It can be frustrating at times. But, I do love a challenge.
So, to help you learn more about introversion, here are some common misconceptions people have about introverts and why they are NOT TRUE.

1. Introverts Can’t Lead
Not true. Around 70 percent of CEOs in the world identify as introverts. Think Bill Gates and Warren Buffet! Although leadership might be a bit difficult to navigate as an introvert, it is possible. In fact, some introverted qualities, such as excellent listening skills, can make introverts more effective leaders.
2. Introverts Are Unfriendly
Introverts are more likely to ponder a situation quietly than join in a group discussion. This reluctance to chat can be misinterpreted as being unfriendly. However, introversion does not affect how friendly or unfriendly a person is. Introverts just tend to be uncomfortable with small talk.
3. Introverts Are Socially Awkward
Social awkwardness, like shyness, is a separate trait from introversion. When the situation calls for it, introverts can be very charismatic in social settings. Did you know that nearly 60 percent of lawyers are introverts? Hard to be socially awkward and a lawyer.
4. Introverts Are Hard to Get to Know
Introverts do prefer having few but deep relationships. Once they cement their social circle, they might be reluctant to let more people in. However, they are not difficult to get to know. Ask their friends!
5. Introverts Need to Be ‘Fixed’
This one is a thorn in most introverts’ behinds. Introversion is a personality trait. It is not a mood. It is who we are and who we wish to be for all our lives. When embraced, introversion can be a propellant to great exploits and a source of strength.
6. Introverts Wish They Were Extroverted
I do sometimes envy how my extroverted friends are comfortable in social situations. Similarly, they envy my keen eye, ability to remember things, and composure in sticky situations. So, no. I do not wish I was extroverted. I don’t believe anyone wants to be anything other than what they are.
7. Introverts Are Rude
After a long day of endless social interaction, I can get short with people. I might even ignore them entirely and play Sudoku on my phone instead (which I don’t do anymore because it is rude). But, when this happens, I try to sneak out for a breather. It’s amazing what 15 minutes in the bathroom can do for a girl.
Wrapping Up
So there you go! I hope this helps to clear some stereotypes. As I close, I find it’s easier to beat misconceptions by talking them out. Think someone is unfriendly? Say hi. They might be the sweetest person in the room.
Finally, no post is complete without me saying, there is nothing wrong with being an introvert.
You are not an anomaly.
So go be your introverted self!
